Joy Davis, CSI, CCPR, is CSI’s Communications & Web Community Manager. Described as the “publisher” of CSI’s national web presence, she is responsible for what appears on all of CSI’s websites, and also manages CSI’s LinkedIn and Twitter presence. She led the redevelopment of CSINet (www.csinet.org), and supports CSI's chapter microsite community. Davis is passionate about helping the construction community use social media and the web to improve construction communication. She frequently presents to construction professionals and CSI leaders on:
- Websites for the construction community
- Social media for construction professionals
- Marketing concepts for individuals and CSI leaders
- Newsletters in an e-world
- CSI's mission, and how CSI leaders can use it to make marketing decisions and build a web presence

Techniques and Design Considerations for Strengthening of Existing Concrete Structures
Presented by Joel Levenberg of the Structural Group - Strengthening Division
Although the upgrade of concrete structures is somewhat of a “scientific art” that has been practiced for many years it has evolved into a complex science that requires a blend of engineering, material science and construction perspectives. Projects may utilize traditional materials such as conventional cement-based and steel materials as well as advanced composite materials (FRP’s) commonly used for aerospace applications. As the techniques to properly design and install these materials for retrofit applications are not common to the design and general construction industry, they can cause strengthening projects to be even more challenging and complex than new construction.
There are many factors that create the need for strengthening. They include construction and design errors, increase in live load, new code requirements, low concrete strength, voids created during concrete placement, new penetrations and prevention of progressive collapse from blast loads. Unfortunately, the speed at which new construction projects are being completed today also contributes to some of these issues.
This presentation will describe the different techniques, materials and design concepts used for upgrading concrete structures. Special emphasis will be placed on strengthening with FRP composites- specifically design approach based on the latest ACI 440 (FRP) guidelines, installation methods, fire resistance, testing and QC. The use of each technique will be illustrated through actual case studies.
About the Presenter
Joel Levenberg serves in the strengthening business development role with Structural Group. He has 8 years of construction experience in the repair/strengthening of commercial and industrial facilities. He has been involved in numerous concrete repair and strengthening projects. Joel is a graduate of the University of Colorado and is a member of ASTM committee and the International Concrete Repair Institute.

GreenFormat in Practice: How Manufacturers and Designers Communicate about Green Products
Presenter: James Scott Brew, FCSI, AIA, LEED AP
This session will show how manufacturers are using GreenFormat to facilitate meeting the challenges of communicating the sustainable qualities of their products by providing the fundamental sustainable performance criteria and specific requirements contained within green building rating systems and federal, state and regional environmental / sustainability requirements.
It will further show how designers are using GreenFormat to conduct effective, efficient, and substantiated sustainable materials research in order to meet the varying requirements of different sustainable performance measurement systems. How the value of accurate sustainability data and the advantage of a structured format consistent with standard documentation procedure and conventions can be used to prepare project specifications will be demonstrated.
James Scott Brew, FCSI, AIA, LEED AP is a Principal Architect with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) Built Environment Team and has over 28 years of sustainable design experience in historic, commercial, institutional and residential architecture. James has been a speaker at the USGBC Greenbuild Conference, the Healthcare Summit on Sustainability and the World Conference on Sustainability in Canada, Norway and Japan. He recently spoke at the First International Conference on Building Energy & the Environment in Dalian, China.

Lead Based Paint - The Latest from the EPA
Join us for Lead Based Paint - The Latest from the EPA, presented by Michael McCarty, CSI, CDT. Mr. McCarty holds a Lead Inspector License from the State of Colorado and will be explaining the new requirements and processes for complying with 40 CFR 745.
The May program will be addressing the newly enacted and federally mandated EPA Regulation "40 CFR 745 - Renovation, Repair, and Painting" of surfaces coated with lead based paint. This new rule impacts all work to be prescribed for ANY structure built before 1978, and will take effect April 22, 2010. Many government agencies, municipalities, as well as private institutions have put more emphasis on renovation and updating their facilities wherever possible. When considering our current economic climate, this program should be of interest to us all. Please plan on attending Mr. McCarty’s' program at our May 11th Luncheon Meeting.

Utilizing the First Unified Edition of "The Architectural Woodwork Standards"
Join us for Utilizing the First Unified Edition of “The Architectural Woodwork Standards,”presented on behalf of the Architectural Woodwork Institute by Casey Peterson, LEED AP, sales representative and estimator for New World Millworks.
The Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), along with the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC) and the Woodwork Institute (WI) have collaborated to produce the first unified joint standard for specifying architectural woodwork. This all-encompassing resource manual reflects a three-year effort by these associations to combine previous publications of The Quality Standards Illustrated and The Manual of Millwork, relied upon for half a century by the design community to specify woodwork.
During the presentation, attendees will:
- Learn how to create a specification for architectural woodwork, using a Guide Specification, properly referencing the new standards to embed the applicable sections of the new standards into their specification.
- Understand and be able to utilize the power and details contained in the new Architectural Woodwork Standards with regards to specifications covering these sections.
- Be able to reduce the design and development timeline for wood work elements, resulting in more effective billable hours in the office.

Load Bearing Masonry for Architects
Join us for Load Bearing Masonry for Architects, presented by Diane Travis, LEED AP, Technical Director, Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI). Don’t ignore the load-bearing possibilities of structural brick and concrete block walls. The cost of steel has been sky-rocketing the last two years. By comparison, the cost of brick and block has remained stable. This seminar will tell you about software programs that show you how to design load-bearing masonry walls at a click of a mouse. It will also show you how to make structural connections and weather-resisting details. Finally, we will give you up-to-date cost information about various wall systems and will help you select the right wall for you projects.
